LinkedIn acquired a 30-acre suburban site in Mountain View, California to reimagine as a welcoming campus for employees and the local community. The existing property contained aging 1980s office buildings surrounded by seas of asphalt parking lots. Given the siteĀ“s sunny Santa Clara Valley location, LinkedIn sought to maximize outdoor use and engagement. Working with Studios Architecture, the redevelopment increased work space exponentially with three new buildings and structured parking. By stacking uses vertically rather than spreading horizontally, ample open space was created for private and public use. Inspired by traditional college campuses, where circulation paths foster chance interactions, the new layout features pedestrian walkways with unique materials and character. These varied promenades criss-cross playfully, encouraging discovery and movement.
The landscape design preserves existing mature trees for their design value and environmental benefits, while introducing drought-tolerant plant species well-suited to the regional climate. The goal is a campus integrated with natural systems and attentive to coming challenges of heat and aridity in California.
