Truman Sports Complex’s parking lot islands present an exceptional opportunity to showcase some of Missouri’s key native species. As Kansas City prepares to welcome the world for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, these prairie plants offer a unique chance to share the beauty and resilience of our native landscape with an international audience.

Working with the Missouri Department of Conservation, Deep Roots KC, and KC Native Pitch, our team developed a design that creates a living demonstration of how native plantings can combat urban heat, support biodiversity, and reduce resource consumption.

The summer tournament will coincide with peak blooming season, when these native grasses and wildflowers that once defined the American heartland will be at their most spectacular, demonstrating that sustainable landscapes can be both beautiful and functional.

Key Benefits:

  1. Wildlife & Pollinators: Provides vital habitat for bees, butterflies, and birds while establishing wildlife corridors that support regional biodiversity.
  2. Carbon Impact: Stores significant carbon in soil through deep root systems (10-15 feet), making them among the most effective terrestrial carbon sinks.
  3. Cooling Effect: Naturally cools the area through evapotranspiration, reducing the urban heat island effect.
  4. Water Usage: Requires no irrigation once established and improves stormwater management through deep roots that enhance soil infiltration.
